Denominational Preacher Converted In Tanzania...

Blessed be the God of The Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. Eph 1:3.

Greetings to you all brethren.

I hope the Lord’s work is going on well there. Here ACSOP things are moving perfectly with the help of our Lord Jesus. The students and some of the Christians from various congregations benefited from agriculture training from Healing Hands International last Monday. Healing Hands sent Mr. Ebenezer for two days of training, which will help the school to reduce its budget through farming.

God has done great things to us through His people. Last month, God gave us a great opportunity to meet with Jeremiah Israel who was a Pentecostal preacher. After the long discussion on what the Bible says about how someone can be saved, he saw I have a point and he started listening to what the Bible says on salvation. His great concern was how can someone be baptized on the same day is believed? (as you know this people overlook scriptures) The answer is found in the Bible filled with many references on the people who were baptized immediately after they obeyed and I led him to a couple of verses. Another argument he found hard to defend was their system of leadership.  He was a pastor himself, but his first born is only twelve years old. And as you know they never use Biblical example of leadership.  After one week long discussions he said, I was not Biblically baptized; I was wet if the Bible is correct. So, immediately he asked for the right baptism. Now, he is learning some other things in order to help those he was leading. But what moved me to write about him is the fight he had with his bishops. After his baptism he went back to his bosses to surrender all things that were given to him.  The first thing in their meeting he said, “I didn’t know that you are part of a denominational group, you are not Biblically sound, you need to teach people the truth.”  He used all his time to teach them the only one Bible church. Another pastor followed him in the night as Nicodemus did to Jesus, asking him more about his decision and about the church of Christ. Then he called me that night to talk to him, and he is now in my contact list of those wanting to learn. Now we are teaching his wife. Pray for us as we are learning with her. Please pray for the Kisongo Church efforts and the Andrew Connally School Of Preaching, that we can be used much more as an evangelistic tool in East Africa.

Graduation In Ukraine...

Dear brothers, families and churches.

It's been a year since the building in Gorlovka was seized. Unfortunately, Russian aggression is still there. The military actions are still taking place, and it seems there will be yet another military campaign in summer. We continue training ministers for God's kingdom. This year we had another group of students graduate from BVBIU. We celebrated this wonderful event in Ternopil, where we had been located for the past year. We had three graduates this year: Sergey Vorobyov, Sergey Chubenko, and Vladimir Polomoshnov. Each one of them started their studies in Gorlovka, and now they have received diplomas holding their Bachelor's degree in Biblical studies. Yet we know that this is only the beginning of their personal spiritual growth.

Sergey Chubenko and his family return to their hometown Smila, Cherkassy region. Sergey will be an assistant preacher, and he will be getting more experience there. We pray for them to start a new church in a while. His wife, Lyudmila, will be teaching Bible classes for kids and helping with ministry for ladies. The church in Smila is glad to receive such help.

Vladimir Polomoshnov returned to his hometown Ochakiv, Mykolaiv region. There are no church of Christ congregations in this town. Vladimir plans to start a new congregation there and he will try to visit and help a congregation in Odessa, which is closer to him.

Our brother in Christ, Sergey Vorobyov, is in the most difficult situation. He used to live and work in Donetsk before the military actions. As of right now, his house is destroyed, and he is homeless. He is looking for an opportunity to serve at any congregation of the Lord’s church in any part of Ukraine that will need his assistance. I ask you to pray for him and his future.

It is time for summer break at the Institute. The students received an assignment for the summer to preach and teach at local congregations, helping their leaders. The classes will resume in September. During this period, I usually visit different congregations and look for new students for the next school year. Also, we might change the location for our school, it might be a town which is located closer to Kiev and the airport. We want to try to make traveling for our Ukrainian and American teachers easier. It will also be more convenient for our students.

We have several prospective students who are willing to study in our program. This time it will be students from different areas of Ukraine. May God bless them in their desire, give them opportunity, and strengthen their families in this wise decision.

We continue helping refugees from Donetsk area. This time we forwarded humanitarian aid sent from France. Unfortunately, there are more people who are in need of this help. Many people are running out of money that they've been saving for emergency. We are grateful for all who are participating in this.

In May, we had American brothers in Christ visit, Jim Sherman and Steve Housley. Jim taught second-year courses on James and Preacher and His Work.  Steve taught first-year courses on John and John's epistles. They also taught Bible classes for the church in Kramatorsk via Skype. We are grateful for their work and ministry.

We thank everyone who supports Bear Valley Bible Institute in Ukraine. With your help and prayers, we plan to have seven more ministers graduate next year. Wars start and wars end, but the kingdom of God will not be destroyed ever.

Your brother in Christ,

Sopelnik Dennis

Graduation And Other Activities At The West Coast School Of Preaching...

Dear Brethren,

By God’s grace we went through another month of activities successfully. Classes went on successfully, even though preparation towards the pending graduation was also going on. There was also a two-week period for short-courses which went on as planned. The term’s examinations were also held as planned.

PAINTING
Paintings of the school blocks were also done.

GRADUATION
The school’s scheduled graduation went on as planned. All graduates were present to receive their awards.

GRADUATION EXPENSES
Howe had given us $500.00 for the graduation which when converted gave us GHC 1,800.00. Our expenditures, however, exceeded what was received. Below, please, find expenditure made on the graduation.

Amount received = GHC 1,800.00

EXPENDITURE

1) Hiring of (Plastic chairs/Canopies) = GHC 350.00

2) Transportation = GHC 290.00

3) Decoration = GHC 350.00

4) Water = GHC 175.00

5) Address System = GHC 105.00

6) Meals = GHC 1,200.00

7) Soft Drinks = GHC 360.00

TOTAL = GHC 2,830.00

DEFICIT = GHC 1,030.00

POULTRY/GARDEN/GOATS
Brother Todd also provided funds to purchase some goats. These funds gave us four goats. Both poultry and garden are growing well. As reported to you earlier, the birds have started laying eggs.

REPAIR/MAINTENANCE
We continue to have breakages on some of our doors and other equipment. Our photocopier also had a breakdown and was repaired. Funds used for these repairs are quoted in the financial report.

FUNDS TO THE COOK
In the financial report, we quoted four weeks of funds to the cook, even though the school went on break on graduation day, April 18, 2015. The explanation is that we pleaded with four of the students who stayed to see for the upkeep of the poultry and garden.

Recapping Graduation At ITL In Guatemala...

In March we were blessed to be able to host our 6th Annual ITL Lectureship and our 3rd Graduation from Instituto Teológico Latinoamericano (ITL).

This culminated two years of dedicated study and sacrifices for our full-time students and three years of the same for our students in our Saturday program, and made possible the graduation of our Gamma class. These and other accompanying events took place on March 19 – 23.

This year we had guests from many places. Of course, most attending were from Guatemala. Other Central American countries represented were Costa Rica, El Salvador and Honduras. Our U.S. visitors included William & Alwanda Carothers (Nashville, TN), Mary Clark (Hemet, CA), Jim & Cherie Dempster (Morristown, TN), Aralee Hernandez (Los Angeles, CA), Ashunda Montgomery (Parsons, TN), Opal Fulwood, her son Daniel, and Nelson & Veda Stephens (Sumter, SC), Candelario Rodriguez (Corona, CA), Eric Owens (Decatur, GA), Bob Turner (Denver, CO), and Larry & Carol Waymire (Lexington, TN).

We are grateful to God that ITL was able to fund the travel costs for family members of our full-time graduates and they spent their nights at the ITL facility. So, we had a FULL house. But everyone was so thankful to be here that no one complained about the close space that everyone shared.

We would be honored if you would allow us a moment of your time to walk you through these exciting days.

Thursday, March 19 – ITL’s President’s Banquet
Our graduation events began on Thursday night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel with the annual President’s Banquet, the hotel where all of our lectureship speakers and some of our out- of-country guests stayed.

It was a great evening. While being seated, and during the dinner time, everyone enjoyed a slide presentation prepared by Byron and Snezana Benitez, highlighting ITL events for the past year. Darvin Alvarez opened the event and a great dinner followed. Near the end of dinner, ITL’s president introduced our after-dinner speaker, Larry Waymire, the director of Caribbean Ministries and one of the ministers for the Broad Street church of Christ in Lexington, TN. He was accompanied by his wife Carol, a professor at Freed-Hardeman University.

The night continued with several special presentations. Patricia Olimpia, Soliz Maldonado and Maclovio & Virginia Calderon were given this year’s President’s Service Award for their unselfish dedication and service throughout the years. Appreciation awards were also presented to key individuals who have played an important role for ITL for the past year. Dr. Henry España, a medical doctor, for example, was honored for his continued contribution to ITL. Dr. España is not a member of the church, yet has been named the “ITL doctor” for the frequent medical attention he gives to our staff and students at a significantly discounted rate. We were honored to have him and his wife, Dora Alicia, attend the banquet. Others honored were our speakers, our ITL cook and secretary, and those ladies from Linda Vista who every week prepared meals for our students. There were special gifts given to some of our guests from the United States who have adopted students through our Help Train Messengers (HTM) Ministry. The program concluded with the presentation of our 2015 graduating class in their caps and gowns, their receiving various awards pertaining to their studies and with a lot of pictures.

Friday, March 22 – Excursion Day
On Friday, our guests from the U.S., our graduates and their families, and we traveled first to the historic area of Guatemala called Zone 1. There they were able to take a guided tour of our National Palace. After the tour, they then entered one of Guatemala’s main cathedrals. Following lunch in the extravagant restaurant called Wendy’s, everyone got back on the bus and we traveled to Antigua Guatemala, one of the old capital cities. Our first stop was at a coffee farm where the group received a personal tour. Following the tour, we traveled to the central park and to one of Antigua’s famous markets. There some of our guests “shopped until they were ready to drop.” After shopping, we ate at Pollo Campero, Guatemala’s own fried- chicken restaurant. As we returned, our full-time graduates were all with the ITL graduation ring donated by Mark and Teri Stevens, an elder and his wife from the Richland church of Christ in Richland, WA. Having had a full day, everyone was now looking forward to a good night’s rest and to the upcoming weekend events.

Saturday, March 22 – Our 6th Annual Lectureship Begins
This year we held our 1st day of the lectureship at the Linda Vista building, which opened with a very good attendance. We also used a near-by house for our children’s classes.

This year’s theme was El Crecimiento Dinámico de la Iglesia (The Dynamic Growth of the Church). Again, we had a great line-up of speakers for our keynotes and for our class times. Those coming from abroad were Gilberto Astorga and Moises Umaña from Costa Rica, Alexander Castellanos from El Salvador, and Jim Dempster, Eric Owens and Bob Turner from
the United States. Our speakers from Guatemala included Misael Ajuchan, Nicolas Chiquival, Raul Duran and Alfonso Sapon. In addition, Silvia Castellanos from El Salvador returned to share a special lesson with our ladies.

Lunch and dinner were provided to all. Before dinner, there was a special question-and- answer panel. This is always a highlight of the day where our speakers are “grilled” with questions pertaining to the lessons they taught. We are grateful that this has always been a time of learning and sharing and, thankfully, always conducted with a spirit of love and courtesy. After dinner, we had our last two lessons, and to top the day off there was a new babe born into Christ. We will be sending more information on this baptism in another message very soon. So, be looking for it.

Afterwards, everyone headed to their places of abode for another night’s rest to be ready for our Sunday events.

Sunday, March 24 – Conclusion of Lectureship and ITL’s Graduation Ceremony
The first day of the week is always a special time for Christians. However, this day was extra special because so many people joined us as we concluded our lectureship and for the graduation event. Because of the large attendance expected, we rented a facility for the Sunday events. There were about 500 people present! It was great to have several churches of Christ present. The service was conducted by the members of Linda Vista with the help of brothers from several of these visiting congregations.

After the sermon, presented by Eric Owens, there were several responses to the Lord’s invitation. Among these responses were two precious souls requesting to put their Lord on in baptism. As we  said earlier, we will be sending a message giving information about them and their obedience to the gospel.

After the corporate assembly, lunch was served to everyone and the graduation followed. Pomp and Circumstance started to play and then the president if ITL’s, the staff and participating guests entered. After a brief pause the audience stood and our full- time class valedictorian, Elmer Eduardo Torres Aquino, entered the auditorium, who was followed by Victor Noe Ajuchan Hernandez our Saturday program valedictorian. They were followed by the remainder of our full-time class: Javier Arturo Alfaro Umaña, Cristhian David Cardenas Sevilla and Daniel

Alberto Izaguirre Rodriguez. Then came the remainder of our Saturday program students:
Sandra Judith Martinez de Ajuchan, Dimas Baldemar Davila Canizales and Abel Elisandro Perez Boror. As you can imagine, the excitement and emotions were very high.

Once everyone had entered, it was now time for the colors (the flags). It was quite impressive to see the flags from Guatemala, from the U.S.A. and from ITL enter the auditorium. Afterwards, both countries’ national anthems were played and normal customs and courtesies were rendered by its citizens during the anthem.

One important point we would like to mention is the few moments we took to honor our co-worker, brother and friend, Anibal Ramirez, who was absent again from our activities because of his illness. We gave his family, Damaris and his three girls, a reward to him on our behalf.

We informed you about his condition in the previous report. His last exam was not as positive as the doctor or he was hoping because the hepatitis C virus is still present. The doctor has now taken him off all medications, is evaluating what else to do and has encouraged him to seek alternative treatments. Please pray fervently for Anibal.

The Gamma Class was made up of four full- time graduates and four Saturday graduates. During the ceremony both valedictorians gave speeches. The full-time class presented a gift to ITL to be placed with gifts from previous classes.

Hawatthia, as president of ITL, awarded our graduates with their degrees and certificates from ITL. Byron placed the hood upon Elmer as he received his degree. Bob Turner awarded the full- time students their degrees and certificates on behalf of Bear Valley Bible Institute of Denver. Jim Dempster gave the elder’s charge. To close, the colors were removed and final words were given from Hi. He dismissed them, saying, “I had the honor to lead you into this auditorium, but your valedictorians will have the honor of leading you out.” The graduates exited followed by the president, the staff and other graduation participants.

As part of the graduation program, we had the cutting of the cake. There were two VERY big cakes. One of them even had a picture of the full- time class. They had never seen themselves as frosting! Everyone enjoyed the cake. After the cake we presented and prayed on behalf of the two new converts.

That evening, the staff, the graduates, their families and the lectureship guests had dinner at Pizza Hut (this was the graduates’ choice and our last meal as a group). While there, 2015 medallion presentations were also made.

As you can see from the pictures included, the entire weekend was great and we are thankful to God for the way everything turned out. We are so thankful to the leaders at Linda Vista for their continued support for ITL and to the members at Linda Vista for their hard work at making this event such a success. There were at least 40 Linda Vistians (we made up that word) involved in various areas. We also thank William and Alwanda Carothers for being in charge of putting this year’s event on video and audio, a good memory keepsake for all who desire to receive it. In addition, we give thanks to our speakers and to those who traveled so far to be with us and to share this special time. And last, but definitely not least, we say thanks to our supporters whose generous donations make possible everything we do.

Monday and Tuesday, March 23 and 24 – It is “almost” time to relax!
On Monday, most of our student family members and most of our speakers departed. The ITL facility became quiet with only the graduates there. Our graduates departed Guatemala the following Friday.

There were a few guests who stayed an extra day to relax a little. On Monday, at a much slower pace, we returned back to Antigua taking the time to celebrate the anniversary of one of our speakers and his wife, who were from Costa Rica. We ate at one of Antigua’s famous restaurants called Calle de la Fonda Real. It was just down time. These remaining guests departed Guatemala on Tuesday.

The Gamma Class
Allow us a moment to tell you of the plans and works of our recent graduates from the Gamma class. We will begin with our Saturday graduates.

All four Saturday graduates are from the San Antonio church of Christ in San Miguel Petapa. Victor, Dimas and Elisandro have various responsibilities with the church (i.e., preaching, teaching, song leading, etc.). Sandra is actively involved in the children’s ministry and with the ladies. They will continue their work with the congregation. Each one of them stated that they felt better equipped to serve after attending ITL. Just recently, Victor returned to ITL to teach a Spanish class to our new class that entered ITL. He is also interested in teaching in our Saturday program.

Our full-time program graduates, with the exception of Daniel Izaguirre, have returned to their countries to serve the churches there. Elmer Torres, from El Salvador, has returned to the congregation that had sent him to ITL for training. He plans to preach and to work closely with the young people.

Javier Alfaro and Cristhian Cardenas, both from Costa Rica, have returned to their congregation to serve. They, too, will be preaching and they have a strong desire to work with the young people. Cristhian, Lord willing, will be sent out by this church to start a new church plant next year. María Eugenia Jimenez Castro, the ministers’ wife from their congregation was present and made an interesting comment about Javier and Cristhian. She said, “I know Biblical miracles have ceased, but the change that I have seen in Javier and Cristhian is close to being a miracle.” That was a positive comment for those of us at ITL.

Daniel Izaguirre, from Honduras, is still with us. He entered one quarter late and will officially be a graduate once he completes this quarter. Being the “old man” on campus, he is definitely showing his leadership skills with those in the new class. Once he completes this quarter, he will return to Honduras and serve with the congregation where he was prior to coming to ITL.

Time to rest!
At least we thought it was! But, we were wrong! It was time to prepare for our Delta class. Now, they are here! Lord willing, we will soon be sending a report introducing the class members to you. In addition to our new students, the two couples brought a total of five children with them (an 11 year-old, a 7 year-old, a 4 year-old, a 2 year-old and a 1 year-old). Oh yeah, did we forget to mention that one of the wives is also pregnant? Soon we’ll introduce you to our Delta class.

Thanks for the love and concern that you have for the Lord’s work here in Guatemala. May God bless each of you abundantly!

Serving Jesus in Guatemala!

Graduation Is The Theme Of The Week...

Graduation Sunday! Seven men completed their two-year course of studies at the Bear Valley Bible Institute in Denver. The graduation banquet was one of the finest, with men who spoke about their journey and shared their appreciation. Wesley Walker spoke to those who were gathered for this occasion and delivered a powerful message to encourage these men in the need to be motivated by the glory of God to fulfill the task before them. The night was incredibly special for all who shared in this event.

Graduation was also scheduled for the school in Ukraine. Amidst the challenges they face, we are encouraged by the dedication of these students to complete their studies. We are excited for them and pray God’s provisions for their life in service to His kingdom. We hope to have pictures and information in next week’s report. Please pray for the brethren in this war-torn country for the challenges before them.

News from other locations around the world indicate the power of God at work in blessing the message preached. The willingness, sacrifice, and dedication of these men in their preparation for preaching the gospel, encouraging faithful brethren, restoring the erring, and lifting up the fallen is an indication of why it is such an honor and privilege to fellowship with these men in their journey.

We appreciate your prayers on behalf of this work, as well as, for the various components and complexities of the program. Remember Keith Kasarjian as he works with the brethren in Nepal on ways to aid in the relief efforts needed for the brethren and people of Nepal. Please remember the graduates in Denver and Ukraine as they enter ministry. Also, we ask you to pray for the direction of this work in the months ahead.

Now on to this week’s incredible reports...

Reporting, Reconnecting, And Recharging...

May has been a marvelous month! Currently, we are home in the United States on our annual furlough reporting trip and are thoroughly enjoying our visits with the brethren. We so enjoy these times of reconnecting with our dear friends and family, being in your homes, sharing meals, and just getting so many hugs! It has been a great time of “recharging the batteries” for us in order to go back and continue the work. Each of you have been so kind and supportive. We thank you all and we hope our report and pray it brings a measure of encouragement. God bless!

Developments at the Avenida Sacramento church of Christ
The Trent Kennedy Family has arrived in Paraguay! They arrived on May 15th and will be working with the church and the local missionaries for the next three months. They will be teaching English using the Bible, offering a parenting class, and encouraging the congregation through their Christian example. Trent will also be teaching some classes in the Asuncion Bible Academy along with other studies and activities. They also plan to study Spanish while in the country. We’re excited to have them in Paraguay and thankful for their servant’s heart. You can follow their developments on their blogsite: http://beingwhatiwanttobe.blogspot.com

There are several exciting events and activities scheduled for the upcoming months which include: an evangelistic campaign with a mission group from Palm Beach Lakes, a men’s retreat and planning session, a survey trip to Ciudad del Este, a ladies day seminar, Bible Academy evangelistic campaigns, “Friends and Family Day,” several visiting brethren from the USA, and various special studies. It’s going to be a busy time!

BAPTISM!
David Salvioni was immersed into the body of Christ after Sebastian Garcia (one of our current Bible Academy students), taught him the Gospel. David brought two of his close friends with him, Victor and Juanjo who also obeyed the Gospel call. Praise God! We are so excited to see our young brethren reaching out to their peers and sharing Christ!

Developments at the Asuncion Bible Academy
First Quarter studies already completed! The new “Beta Class” has finished their first courses of study and are doing an outstanding job! They are a much different class than the previous one. It is interesting to see how they have bonded, how they have approached their studies, and how they have responded to the challenges presented within the Academy environment. Overall, we couldn’t be more pleased with this wonderful, new group of students.

We had several new, visiting instructors this past quarter. Brother Enrique Morales, a preacher from the North Texas area, taught “The Cost of Being a Disciple.” He taught the course via our video conference system from the USA. The students responded really well to the class. We also had brother Darvin Alvarez from the Institute of Theology Latinoamericano in Guatemala City, Guatemala come to Paraguay to teach “Bible Geography.” Again, the students responded well to the class. We are so thankful to have these good brethren take the time and energy to assist us with the curriculum of studies in the Bible Academy.

Brother Gary Fallis will be returning to Paraguay June 1 through 5th to teach “The Godhead.” This will be his second time to teach this class in the Academy and his third trip to Paraguay. He plans to bring his wife, Sara, with him who will be teaching some ladies classes while here, also.

On The Road To Ghana, But Headed Back To Cameroon...

Dearest in christ,

Greetings to you from your brother Elangwe. I am writing this report in Ghana. I am sorry that I missed my report last week. It was due to a delay on the road as I was traveling. I do hope you are doing great in all that you.

I came to attend the graduation ceremony of Ateiku School of Evangelism and a lectureship on Church Growth. It was a blessing for me to attend. I will do my best to send a comprehensive report when I return.

Before I departed Cameroon, our students had already taken their second quarter exams and they are off to 21 locations for evangelism. Keep them in your prayers as some of them will be working in 3 virgin lands to see the establishment of a new congregations.

All our graduates will be in Kumba for 5 days of house to house evangelism to establish a new congregation there. Keep praying for their success.

Pray for minister David and Jonathan as they will visit Cameroon to teach in the school on “The New Testament Church.”

Share our report with others. Until next week, keep my travels back to Cameroon in your prayers. I return home Tuesday.

Thank you for all you do to sustain this work. Your prayers, love, and support God will reward in due season.

Elangwe and family

Amazing Things Are Happening In Tanzania...

Arusha congregation…
“So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and truth will make you free.” John 8:31,32.

Making the Arusha congregation a mature and fruitful one is a plan that is pleasing to God. Many souls were won a few years ago and we are fully into maturing the congregation. We are putting internal checks to ensure that the converted souls are given the needed love of God. The main focus is to make them true Disciples of Christ. All the teaching and church activities are intended to move people to love God, love others and serve others. We feel it is wrong to convert souls that we cannot care for.  And therefore most of our activities now center on ensuring that the converted souls are intact. In other words, at present, our evangelical efforts are centered within. My efforts in visitation are increased and the church is doing great spiritually. The church confesses a total positive change and spiritual upliftment. To God is the glory, Amen.

End of the quarter
The second quarter has come to an end and our students are happy to go home and visit with their families. We are sure that the knowledge they have acquired from our instructors will be used for the glory of the Kingdom, as our school motto states “…entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also”  (2 Timothy 2:2). The congregations that they serve are going to be encouraged and edified in many ways. While they were here, they have shown great courage and zeal to teach others. The results of our outreach program with the students this month was tremendous, many good Bible studies are still in progress and ten people have obeyed the gospel. There are many good reports such as members who are continually being restored, and others who have been coming to the school from congregations around the area as a result of this evangelism program.

Translation team…
In the month of May, this team was very busy to make sure that all literature that will be used during the campaign is in order. We were also able to produce an excellent booklet called “Back to the Bible”.  It is a tool that has been made in a simplified way and so anyone can read and understand. While the students are gone, the faculty and members in the congregation around the area will have an opportunity to participate in the Safari for Souls campaigns. Many workers from the US will come to participate in this great event of reaching out to the lost souls. I can’t wait to participate in this great campaign. It is our prayer that God will use many of us to proclaim His mighty name during this time.

In Him,

Students In Haiti Receive New Suits, Shirts, & Ties...

Hello from the Caribbean,

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! (Romans 10:13-15)

Thank you for being our partners in the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus the Christ. Without your prayers, encouragement and support, we could not do the work we are doing. May God continue to use each of us to broaden the boarders of His kingdom.

An English Class From The Bible
Percil and Theresa Watkins led a team of workers to Haiti from the Hickory Church of Christ  in Hickory, North Carolina. Percil taught an English class from the book of Ephesians. The students were thrilled to work on their English and study  the  word  of  God. Percil did an excellent job and the class is eager for him to return. It is great to have great teachers!

A Focus On The Ladies
Theresa  Watkins, Barbara  Gnann, Kamy Bibbee and Janet Keever met with the ladies in the mornings to study the precious word of God. In the afternoons they spent time at the Sonlight Children’s Home. The ladies were so excited to be able to study the word of God and spend time fellowshipping one another. This is helped to build unity, develop friendships and provide spiritual growth for these ladies. They then were able to take this excitement back to their home congregations. The time spent with the children at Sonlight was very important. The girls and the boys were able to see the lives of Christian women who are true servants of God. They were able  to witness the dedication that should be in every Christian. Thank you ladies for your love for the Lord and willingness to step out of your comfort zone.

Printing Operation Begins
One of the great needs in Haiti is more material printed in Haitian Creole and French. In early 2014, we shipped a container with several items for the International School of Theology (IST) and one of the items was a Risograph copier. This is a high speed copier capable of printing 120 copies per minute. In the picture above is one of our directors, brother Felix, two of our students, Lemours and Viciere, and our secretary Michaelle. They are in the process of printing material for the other students. We are excited about the ability of printing this material. The cost of the Risograph was only $500 and the cost of printing, including ink and paper is about two and one half cents per page. What does this mean for Haiti? We can provide material for our students, area preachers and Bible school teachers are able to have material printed for their classes. This means the word of God will now be able to be sent to many different areas in the community and throughout Haiti. The result will be more souls for Christ, more workers in the kingdom and the level of knowledge will increase.  God has blessed us with the use of the printed page and to Him be all the glory. Pray for this ministry.

The Preacher Students Receive New Suits, Shirts & Ties
My wife, Carol, headed up a drive to send suits to the students at IST. The response was overwhelming and we sent 67 suits, over 200 neckties and several shirts, pants, shoes, socks and jackets. The students were given the opportunity to go through the clothing and find items that would fit them and every student took home a sack full! Most of the preachers in Haiti do not receive a salary for preaching because the churches are very poor; a weekly contribution may only be $10-$12. Therefore, most of the preachers have to work at other jobs to support their families.

We plan to do this drive every other year so that each student who comes through IST will benefit from the program. The students are truly thankful for the items they receive. They wanted me to thank everyone who sent items and let you know how grateful they are for your love and help. I will keep you informed about future shipments.

A Visit With the Butte Boyer Church of Christ
During the March/April mission trip to Haiti, I had the privilege to visit the Butte Boyer congregation. Three of our students serve as preachers, Bible class teachers and song leaders. There was a heartbreaking tragedy in the congregation and I was asked to speak to them. One of their ladies was attacked in her home when someone broke in to rob her, her father and her mother. Her father, trying to defend his family, was killed and her mother was beaten. The congregation has been by this young lady’s side and is working with her and her mother to overcome this horrible act of violence.

This is a great congregation and is seeking to follow the word of God. As you can see from the pictures, they are stretching the limits of their building. They are planning to move in the future and are saving to purchase property and build a new  meeting  place. They have saved $2,000 which is a great accomplishment for a church in Haiti. If you would like to know how you can  help this congregation, please contact me and I will be glad to share more about their efforts. Pray for the young lady, her mother and the church.

And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it. 1 Corinthians 12:26

Books For The Students And IST
The availability of study material is very limited and books are simply too expensive to buy for most Haitians. Therefore, the students were thrilled to receive 25 books each (in French) from FRENCH LITERATURE. This is a mission effort to the French world sponsored by the Crieve Hall Church of Christ in Nashville, TN. Several books, including a set of commentaries in French, were also donated to IST.

Barry Baggott is the director of the French Literature program. Brother Baggott will be teaching one of the classes next year at the International School of Theology. This will be the first class taught in French. Great things are happening in Haiti through and it is because of congregations and individuals who are willing to make sacrifices so others can be taught the precious word of God. To HIM be the glory!

A Meal Together On The Last Day Of Class
What an honor and thrill to work with the students at the International School of Theology in Haiti. These are men who are truly interested in the preaching, growth and future of the church in Haiti. While some of them will not be full-time preachers, they will be full-time Christians. These students will become the elders, deacons and teachers in local congregations. It is hard to believe we have completed the first year of classes. Year two will begin on August 13th. Plans are now being made for their graduation in May 2016. Once again, I want to say “thank you” to everyone who has made this first year possible. This is not a work that could be done by one person. It truly is a work of the church. I send a huge THANK YOU from the students at IST. Please continue to pray for our efforts.

Haiti Reaches Out To Nepal
The children who live at the Sonlight Children’s Home in Haiti remember the earthquake of 2010. They remember the help that so many have given to them and the people in Haiti. After seeing the devastation in Nepal, they wanted to help. They wrote to five churches in Haiti and  $260 US was raised! This may not seem like much to you but for many Haitians, this is almost a year’s income since about 70% live on about $1.00 per day. I am so proud of our children at Sonlight!!! Please continue to pray for their growth and for the people of Nepal.

Funds Are Needed
I am thankful to the Broad Street congregation in Lexington, TN and the Estes congregation in Henderson, TN because  they support me and the work I am doing. Therefore, all funds raised go directly to the support of the school and other mission efforts of Caribbean Ministries. While most of our efforts are directed toward the school of preaching, we are also working on other  islands. Our goal is to spread the gospel, equip the saints and glorify God. We need morei ndividuals and congregations to partner with us as we seek to reach the lost, strengthen the weak and encourage the faithful. If you or your congregation can help, please fill out the form below and let us how you would like to help. Thank you for love and your prayers. May our heavenly Father be glorified in all that we do!

The Time For Graduations...

The week ahead is the final week of studies for eight men who are prepared to enter the ministry. Graduation is scheduled for next Sunday morning and the week will be filled with activities from the classroom to the banquet room. This week is one where we laugh and cry together as we say goodbye and pray for these families who transition from full-time studies to full-time ministry. Please pray with us on behalf of these graduates.

Denver is not the only group celebrating graduation. The Bible Institute in Ternopil, Ukraine also celebrates graduation next Sunday. Additionally, over the next few months the Tamale Institute of Biblical studies in Ghana will graduate men on July 2nd, the Southwest School of Evangelism will graduate men on August 28th, and the Center for Biblical Studies will celebrate their graduation on September 5th. Consider the number of men from these four locations that will send men into the ministry in their respective countries and pray for the impact they will have on the world.

The privilege of working with each extension location is humbling and exciting. We are thankful for the opportunity God provides us as we prepare men to preach and teach the gospel of Jesus. The world needs hope and the message concerning the death and resurrection of our Lord is the only one that provides for this need. We appreciate the opportunity to walk along side each of you in the greatest work on earth.

We request that you pray for each of these men and the work they participate in each day. Also, we ask that you continue to remember the challenges facing the work in Nepal. Reports continue to emphasize the need for the people of Nepal, but also our brethren. The report below highlights the devastation experienced by our brethren in two districts. Please read through the report and pray about how you can help with the situation.

Now on to this week’s incredible reports...

The Effective Sending Of Preachers In Arusha, Tanzania...

“And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over the clean spirits. So they went out and preached that people should repent”(Mark 6:7,12 NKJV).  When Jesus spent some times with His disciples, He felt it was necessary to send out the twelve. As they were going out he charged them with certain conditions. He also knew this was a great tool to help these men before He left to heaven. Disciples were sent out so that they could be very effective after the departure of Jesus Christ, thus He sent them out two by two. When the twelve came back, they brought a good report on what happened while they were out there.

That is the same thing happening here at the Andrew Connally School of Preaching. We started the program of sending out students to our area congregations. They are working with these local congregations and helping them in doing evangelism two Saturdays of the month and four Sundays of the month. They worship together with those same congregations. Two students were assigned to work and help at the Kwa Mrombo congregation. Within the time that they have been working there, they were able to establish 17 Bible classes and one baptism. Aurelian Mosha was baptized last week due to the effort made by our students. Among their classes there are those that are very close to obeying the truth and the church has set up a follow-up plan so that much can be accomplished during the time when they will be out of school.

All these and many other good things that are going on in the Lord’s Vineyard here in Tanzania are because of your love, prayers and support. THANK YOU SO MUCH for all that you do and mean in His Vineyard.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we are fighting the battle with the devil. Also, do not forget to pray for Josiah Gaines who is sick, so that this wonderful family may continue to serve here as they have planned.

Your servant in His Vineyard,

Charles Mwanga

God Gives The Increase In The Safari For Souls Campaign...

Greetings Fellow Servants;

We hope and pray this report finds you and yours blessed in all the right ways. What a joy it is to serve the living God. To know He loves us, to know He cares for us, to know He has forgiven us and to know He has prepared a place of eternal rest truly brings peace and comfort to our souls.

The Andrew Connally School of Preaching student body is taking their last couple of classes before they head home for a break. Also, we will be blessed at the end of the month by our brother Ebenezer, who is a trainer for Healing Hands International. He will come and help us and some 50 other fellow Christians, learn more about sustainable small scale farming. We are very grateful for this opportunity to help our student body learn more, that they in turn might better provide for their families and neighbors in the future. Through this knowledge they will be given the tools to be more self-reliant, making their ministry that much more effective.

For the past few weeks we have had several short-term co-workers come, joining us in our evangelistic outreach. Men and women from three different congregations, three different States, including two elders of the Lord’s Church, three evangelist, and three amazing young ladies. A living testimony as to the love some have in the Church: love of God and a love for others. We understand there are many, praying, supporting, encouraging those who came, thank you and may our God bless you richly. What has resulted through these efforts? God has increased His Kingdom by 14 souls. Each participant has grown in the Lord. The Lord’s church in Tanzania has been edified. The Gospel has been preached to hundreds and, is often the case, we truly believe the best is yet to come.

One of our short-term workers, Rod Minor, was ask by an elderly lady, “How many old people have you baptized and killed (she had some fear of water to say the least)? Rod replied, “I have baptized many old people, all have died.” She got it and was baptized into Christ for the remission of her sins, being added to the Church by God! Amen!

Stephanie and want to personally thank you for your prayers and support over the years, making it possible for us to live our dream, our dream of doing God’s will as missionaries. Though we feel undeserving, we are very appreciative of your love and concern. As most of you know, in the last few weeks we have faced some challenges. We have lost some monthly support and we have had to make some challenging choices. Living apart for weeks at a time being one of those choses, so Stephanie can care for her mother for a season. Many of you have prayed and supported us in many ways. We have received one-time funds enough to cover our loss of monthly support for this year. You have prayed for us and your prayers are being answered daily. We have been blessed with some monthly support, making up some of the loss. Yes, God is good and so are you! Thank you so very much.

Please remember our two sisters in Christ, Britney Higgins and Beth Ford, our group from Hoover, AL and our team from Elk City, who will all be arriving over the next week. Also, please remember Stephanie in your prayers, it looks very promising that she will be able to come for a short time in June, allowing me a long stay. If all goes well, she will leave the States on June 2nd, arriving in TZ on the 3rd.

Brothers and sisters, we have many challenges and opportunities to share God’s Word with many here in TZ. We beg of you to continue in your prayers and support that many more might come to the knowledge of God’s love, grace, of Jesus Christ and His Church. Much to do, few are the labors, but our God is able through you! Until all have heard…

In Him,
Cy, Stephanie and Granny

Destruction In Nepal Impacting The Church...

Rasuwa and Dhading district's earthquake report: Information collected from Christian leaders at Rasuwa and Dhading: May 19th, 2015

Dear respected brothers and sisters,

Five mature Christian leaders made an earthquake survey at Rasuwa and Dhading districts of Bagmati zone. They began their travel May 5th of 2015 and returned on May 15th of 2015. They spent 11 days visiting Christian communities and encouraged them in their distress and sorrow. They returned back to Kathmandu safely. I am writing this information based on their words. Yesterday, May 19th of 2015, we: NCBS staff brothers Jerry Golphenee, Parsuram Sunchuri, Deepak Deshar, Surya Tamang, Gajendra Deshar, and Mountain Christian leaders brothers: Mencha Ghale, So Bahadur  Tamang, Dawa lama Tamang, Nar Bahadur Tamang, Sonam Ghale, and two others gathered together at NCBS hall and talked around five hours about the situations of the mountain Christians. We were unable to listen their grief and sorrow. Their information is given below:

There are 3,067 houses in Rasuwa district. Among them 432 Christian families are in 8 different congregations. All houses were completely destroyed. 5 Christians died and a few were injured.

There are 3,572 houses in Dhading district. Among them 286 Christian families are in 4 congregations. All houses were completely destroyed. 4 Christians died and a few were injured.

Immediate relief work (short term goal):
Christian brothers request us to provide Rice, oil, salt, tents or tarps (rain protection), clothes and kitchen materials. All Christian communities are living together with other nonbelievers. They all share their relief materials in equal.

Long term relief work (Long term goal):
Help in their building construction. Try to provide money to purchase zinc roofing material, wood for house support, nails, cements bags etc.

We need your help

Thank you

Preparing For Graduation In Tamale...

Tamale is very calm and every planned activity is on course. Every staff member is healthy and cheerful. It is our prayer that the Lord will continue to bless all and sundry who contribute in diverse ways to the success of Tamale Institute of Biblical Studies.

By the divine grace of our Lord, we have once again completed another two year program and have slated the graduation activity for the 3rd of July, 2015. Ten energetic men will be ushered into the preaching fraternity on this very important day to share their knowledge and experiences with their congregations.

We wish to invite all brethren who would want to share the joy of the day with the entire Northern brethren in Ghana.

As part of the occasion, the Board of the Institute has decided to honor the late Avril Keoughan, who died in the course of her duty to the Lord on Monday, the 27th of June, 2011 when she was in Tamale to teach the students Primary Health Care.

Currently, the Institute is on break and is preparing earnestly for the graduation.

Taking a retrospective look at the just ended two year activity, the Institute was faced with the challenge of inadequate instructors. The challenge was due to the fact that Brother Tony Johnson had to leave in the middle of affairs and just a month later, Brother Jaminja Ndakar another resident instructor developed an injury in the hip bone which has kept him bedridden. Management had to arrange for external instructors from Accra and Takoradi at a high cost. On this, we shall be glad if lovers of the work of the Lord could sponsor someone to replace brother Tony to teach in Tamale Institute of Biblical Studies in Ghana. Anyone interested in helping or wants information on the issue should contact brother Steven Ashcraft (samtnhome@yahoo.com) or Baah Joseph Okyere (joebaah2003@yahoo.co.uk)

So far, nine (9) applicants have been interviewed for admission in the next batch of students. We hope to have more students by the reopening date of 29th June 2015.

May the Almighty God continue to bless us all and empower us to do more to extend the boundaries of his glorious Kingdom.

Baah Joseph Okyere

More News From Nepal And Graduation Approaches...

While the news seems to have faded about the recent earthquake in Nepal, last week another 7.3 quake centered north of Kathmandu left a wake of destruction and more dead. This earthquake was not as severe as the first, but the fear remains. Jerry Golphenee sent another report about the situation in Nepal and continues to ask for our prayers and help. If you desire to be involved in helping with the need in Nepal, please see Jerry’s letter below and consider ways you can provide for the need.

Students in Denver are two weeks away from completing their studies and graduation. We ask you to pray for them as they enter the ministry. We are thankful for their time at Bear Valley and know God will bless them throughout their service to Him. After graduation, students will enjoy a short break to see family and supporters before beginning another quarter of studies with a new class of students.

Speaking of new students: we are excited about the possibilities of the new class in Denver. The list of students indicates the potential of 15+ students beginning in August. Satan will present many challenges to prevent them from attending, so we ask you to pray that God open the necessary doors for the support they seek and for the strength to follow through with their plans.

Additional reports this week indicate God’s continued blessings on the efforts of staff and students throughout the program. The encouragement received from reading the ways God works through these men to strengthen them in faith, bring the lost to Christ, and strengthen the brethren is immeasurable. Pray for them as they engage in kingdom work.

Changing Lives And Giving Hope To People...

"For every beast of the forest is Mine, the cattle on a thousand hills."  Psalm 50:10

Whose Cattle? The Masai tribe believes that God gave THEM all the cattle.  Supposedly they will steal cattle from other tribes, but do not consider it "stealing" because of their belief that it was theirs in the first place! By the way, their view is wrong.

Andrew Connally School of Preaching: The second quarter for the English and the Swahili Programs has got to the end last Friday. The classes which were taught in the English program were "Christian Evidences" (Daniel Gaines), "Exodus - Deuteronomy" (William Korio), "Public Speaking I" (Charles Herbert), "Acts" (Bernard Kulanga), and "Farming Project" (Ahimidiwe Kimaro).

The classes which were taught to the Swahili program were “The Gospel of John & 1-3 John" (Maurice Gasper), "Greek I" (Losotwa Michael), "Public Speaking 2 [Practical Homiletics]" (Ahimidiwe Kimaro), "Biblical Interpretation II" (Julius Gasper) and "Old Testament 4 [Study of the Major Prophets: Isaiah - Daniel]" (Desdery Massawe).

Kisongo Bible School (for the "person in the pew” - four evenings a week) will end classes next week, which are "Joshua, Judges and Ruth" taught by Losotwa Michael, "Exodus & Leviticus" by Maurice, " Hermeneutics" by Ahimidiwe Kimaro and "Mark & Luke" by Ibrahim Mrutu. This school now has eight devoted students and the Kisongo church is really proud of them.

“They have devoted themselves for ministry to the saints…” On Monday, Dennis with his three daughters and Brian begin the return journey to their respective homes (USA). We enjoyed all the fellowship and laughs! Our deep appreciation is extended to this team for their time and effort in preaching the gospel in Njiro chini ,which resulted to an addition of three souls in the kingdom of God!

May the Lord bless you for your concern, prayers, and generosity. We thank you for your participation in spreading the Gospel in East Africa. You are changing lives and giving hope to people who didn't have any. We love you and appreciate your sacrifices and are indebted to you!

With love from Andrew Connally School of Preaching,

A Macedonian Call, Preachers' Forum, and Addition To The Kingdom...

Dearest in Christ,

Greetings to you all over there in Jesus’ name. We do hope you are doing great. With us here, we continue to struggle with health challenges from some members of the congregation and the school. My wife was sick, but thanks be to God she was getting better by the time I typed this report.

Last week went on well concerning studies and other things in BVBIC-Wotutu. Students are surprised how time flies. They are already approaching their second quarter exams in a few weeks. Keep them in your prayers as we have already lined up villages with the Macedonian call, “Come over and help us.” We are doing our best, at the level of the office, to finalize arrangements on logistics and transportation for our students to make it there.

Kids of the Brightland Christian Academy assemble during their devotions. Brother Nsong Nelson, one of our graduates, continues to make known the gospel truth to these children in these tender ages. They continue to love the Lord and His ways from the way they are being taught. Many continue to attend our children’s class, which is ever growing as the weeks pass by, mostly now that we have their own small hall behind our main building.

A sister in Christ, sister Esther Oman, runs a nongovernmental organization called “Reachout.” She came to Brightland this past week to donate creative books to the school. This will help us build the learning process of the kids. It was great and we give glory to God.

She was happy to come and she loved what she saw, that the children sang a welcome song with pure vocals. They were clean and respectful. Keep her in your prayers as her service for humanity.

She also gave games to the children in the nursery school department to use during off classes that are ongoing. The is a saying that learning without playing makes Jack a dull boy, so we wish the best for the kids in BCA. They are already making the difference with other schools in the communities.

We rounded out the week with an annual preachers’ forum in Bonaberi in Douala. I was invited to teach and we had a discussion on the stage with brother Prince Otobong, an evangelist from Nigeria. Preaching and running a preaching school in the north west of Cameroon is brother Paul Kee, the only American resident missionary in Cameroon. Preaching and running a preaching school in Nso.Our discussion was centered on how we better evangelize the country of Cameroon and also improve on the nurturing process of the congregations here.

A very significant population of preachers and leaders were in attendance to learn and ask questions. It was a very good forum as we struggle to impart knowledge to one another.

A family picture was taken at the end. Most of our graduates were part of the forum from their different congregations. It was great for us to meet again, not as students, but as colleagues now. We shared concrete discussions and learned how the work is going in the field. It is not easy, as many are facing difficulties. Words of encouragement are given as the need arises.

Weekend evangelism is still helping those young congregations and our students love reaching out to many communities. BVBIC-Wotutu continues to expose our students to mission possibilities on weekly basis. The Lord added a soul this weekend. Glory be to His name.

Plans
1) We plan to welcome our coordinator to Wotutu, as he will come and teach a short course on the New Testament church. Keep him in your prayers.

2) Pray for students as they prepare to write exams in few weeks.

3) Pray for the West Coast mission, which will come soon.

4) Pray for the new work the alumni are planning to start in Kumba west.

Appreciations
Thank you for standing by us, thank you for praying for the work here, thank you for your thoughts, and thank you for your priceless support towards this work. If not for you, we doubt where and the level of growth of this work. Thank you. Share this with others. God bless you and replenish all.

Elangwe and family

Partnering In A Great Work Of God...

Greetings Fellow Servants,

It is our hope and prayer that this report finds each of you blessed and serving faithfully. We are blessed by your prayers and support and we thank our God for being a part of His family, the family of God. Our week has been a busy week, full of travel, Bible studies, handing out Bible tracks, Bible correspondence courses, teaching  two short-courses, hosting our short-term co-workers, etc.

Dennis Dickey, his two daughters, Lauren and Mariah and Brian Howard have ministered to the good people of Njiro Chini here in Arusha, along with the church family. Several have obeyed the gospel, while others continue in their studies. Tomorrow our good friends head home, to Indiana. Please remember them in your prayers, along with their families.

Rod Minor, evangelist for the Second and Adams congregation in Elk City, OK, his son Steve (also an evangelist for the Lord’s Church in OK), and granddaughter Micah are working with the church family at Ngrudoto. They have several studies ongoing as they work together with the church family on the eastern slop of Mt. Meru.

Our brother Tom Watkins, elder and servant of God at the Kensington Woods congregation in Hattiesburg, MS is working with the good brothers and sisters at Namanga (boarder town of Tanzania and Kenya). Please remember each of the above mentioned as they serve and those they serve.

A great report from our good brother Yusuph Mdaki: “The church at Ushirombo continues very well. God is protecting the church from false teachers and evil and we give Him thanks for our life. Also we give thanks to all our sponsors who continue to help us.

The church continues to evangelize in many places. We have three who are expecting to obey at any time, as they attend worship each Sunday. Recently, we spread more than 500 tracts during the funeral of our brother who passed away in April. He fell down when he came from the farm and he lost his physical life. His name was Ibrahim, age 58. He became a Christian in February 2013, being taught by Amos Kinasa (graduate of the ACSOP). The tracts cause many to give us invitation to teach, while others are coming to request more lessons.

The Big Need: The Ushirombo congregation will receive many Christians from seven congregations in a seminar for unity. We also want to discuss starting a Bible School for our regions, possibly here in Ushirombo. Our budget is set at 1,500,000/- ($750), we have collected 600,000/- ($300) but are short 900,000/- ($450). We plead for your assistance that God would be glorified, we might be united, and that the lost of Africa might hear the soul saving message of God’s Word before it is eternally to late. In Christ, Yusuph”

Yes, God’s work in Tanzania is growing by His mercy, grace and power. You partner with us in a great work of God and we thank you for that. Please continue praying and supporting His cause where you are, here in Tanzania, and throughout the world. Until all have heard…

In Him,
Cy, Stephanie and Granny

Year-End Travels, Challenges, Health Concerns, And Growth In Guatemala...

Greetings Dear Family and Loved Ones!

We find great joy in writing you once again from Guatemala. Our hope and prayer is that you and your loved ones are doing well and had a great first quarter of 2015!

Our End-of-Year Travels
We are thankful to God that we were able to visit most of our supporters this year. It now requires our splitting up to get the visits accomplished. We are very thankful to those of you who have told us that coming every other year works well.

Our gratitude also goes out to each one of you for your hospitality and kind treatment you showed us while we were with you at the end of 2014 and beginning of 2015. You are the major reason our travels are so enjoyable!

To summarize our travels, allow us just to say that we visited 11 states and four different countries. The States, obviously, is where are our supporting churches are located. The other countries were: Germany, to work with the Euro-American Family Retreat; Bosnia, to visit with Snezana’s family (Hawatthia was able to meet them on this occasion); and Croatia, where we stopped on our way back to Germany after departing from Bosnia (we visited the beautiful Plitvice Lakes National Park).

Regarding the Euro-American Family Retreat, it took place again in Rothenberg ob der Tauber from November 22-26, 2014. The theme this year was “In Relationship with God.” We were again in charge of the teen program. Jeremy Korodaj was present to help us once again. And, this year we had Snezana’s help with teaching the young ladies. We were happy to work with 14 great teenagers.

During the end-of-year holidays, we had the blessing of spending time with family and friends. For Christmas this year, we were in California. For New Year’s we were in Tennessee. We missed seeing Mom Cynthia this year during this time.

Trip to Bosnia & Herzegovina
As we mentioned previously, this year the three of us were able to make a visit to Bosnia. There were a couple purposes for this visit.

First, we visited with Snezana’s family. Byron and Snezana were able to go in April 2014 after a lectureship in Italy. Hawatthia, however, had not been, so this afforded him the opportunity to meet Snezana’s family and to see the country where she was born. We drove from Germany, which took us 14 hours! When we arrived to Banja Luka, at about 11:30 p.m., Snezana’s parents Ilija and Irena were anxiously waiting for us, greeted us warmly, and made sure we had plenty to eat! Our visit with them and with other family members was a blessing. Only Snezana’s mother, Irena, is a Christian in her family, so we are hoping that this will change one day.

And second, our trip to Bosnia allowed us to follow-up on a couple of families that received financial assistance. One of the families was the Ivić family. Some of you donated funds to help this family soon after the terrible flood that affected this family and multitudes more a year ago. Because of your generosity, this family found hope when only despair awaited them. They were and still are all very thankful for the help in such a time of need.

We also helped Milan Ljubojevic, who worked with Snezana’s sister. After an accident at work, Milan began to suffer with pain and difficulty moving. He was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy but is still under testing for other neurological diseases. He is married, has two young daughters and is the sole breadwinner and only occasionally receives a low disability income. So, we decided to send him a small contribution to help with his expenses. Of course, we were anxious to see how Milan was doing. Despite his severe pain and long stay in the hospital, Milan is all smiles. He is a very positive person and was thankful to God for our help and our visit. We pray that he will get to know God better and become a true follower of Jesus as a result.

Some Challenges
This year, upon returning from our end-of-year travels, Byron and Snezana came home to a house full of mold. It was so bad that they did not sleep in the home for five weeks after returning, while they cleaned it and made the place livable again. The mold was in the clothes, books, furniture, shoes—it was everywhere!

They are very thankful that Hawatthia willingly provided a place for them to sleep while they went through the toil of cleaning the house. Snezana, especially, had it rough, since she did most of the cleaning while Byron was busy with ministerial responsibilities. They are also thankful to several members of the church that came several times to help with the cleaning.

The landlord made every effort to repair the house wherever it was suspected that the problem was originating, but to no avail. Because we returned during the dry season, the mold became manageable, but shortly after they repaired and repainted several areas the mold was back again.

As a result of all the trouble they had in this house, Byron and Snezana decided it was best for their health and their sanity to find another place. Thanks to God, they were able to find another place located about a seven-minute drive (depending on traffic) from ITL. This happened at the beginning of April. However, about two weeks after they moved into the new place, the landlord informed them that he wanted to sell the house! He was kind enough to give them the first opportunity to purchase it, but they felt it was not the right moment or the right price. This left them again with the uncertainty of how long they would be able to live there. With many of their things still in boxes, it took away the zeal to unpack, thinking they might need to pack again soon. However, just a today, the landlord said that he had decided to keep the house! So, it appears they may be able to finish unpacking after all. Thank God!

Anibal Ramirez & Darvin Alvarez
Our coworkers, Anibal Ramirez and Darvin Alvarez have had health problems recently, and we are asking for you to please pray for them.

About two months ago, Anibal was diagnosed with hepatitis A and C. The severity affected him greatly, but more so its effects on his involvement with the church and as an instructor at ITL.

Things did not look good for Anibal initially. He was told by the treating physician that he would have to be on total rest. He would not be able to go out, to teach, to visit, or even to read! The doctor was concerned that anything that would create any kind of emotion reaction in him would only make things worse. He immediately began to treat him and said it would be 1 1⁄2 months before he would know if Anibal would respond to the treatment.

His first major blood test done just two weeks after his treatment began showed no progress! This disappointed Anibal, as you can imagine. However, the doctor said he would not see any positive results for another two weeks. When that time came and the test results were out, Anibal had made a 30% improvement! The hepatitis A was completely gone and the doctor said they would now give their full attention to combating hepatitis C! We thank God for Anibal’s progress and we keep praying for him.

The doctor believes Anibal contracted hepatitis A from something he ate that was contaminated and hepatitis C from a blood transfusion he received many years ago to keep him from dying after being shot by a thief who was robbing his sister’s store. Anibal just happened to stop by to see his sister when the thief who was there reacted by shooting him in the stomach. Anibal recovered and has since struggled here and there with his health because of it, but has done relatively very well until now that he has had to fight this serious health problem. Please pray for Anibal’s full recovery.

Our other coworker, Darvin Alvarez, too, suffered some health problems recently. This began around two weeks ago, when he kept complaining of a serious headache and neck ache. Finally, one evening, while he was at ITL, it became obvious that his symptoms were pointing to Bell’s palsy of the right side of his face. By the time he was ready to go home, his lip had begun to sag. Thankfully, Dr. Raul Duran was also at ITL during this time and checked him and prescribed treatment for him temporarily until Darvin could get to his regular doctor in Coban.

After seeing his doctor, Darvin was given treatment for his symptoms and told to rest for a week. As a result, Darvin was not able to accompany some of the new students who were from his area of Guatemala as they made their trip to ITL to begin their studies, or to be at orientation day. Thankfully, he was able to recover enough to begin teaching the following week and to make a trip to Paraguay that was scheduled several months ago, a trip to teach at the Bible school in Asuncion.

Please keep Darvin in your prayers, so that his recovery will continue to be positive, quick and complete.

Because of Anibal’s sickness for the past two months and because of Darvin’s illness three weeks ago, our schedule and work load became even busier than usual. So, please pray for us, too, so we can manage our time, our health, and the work well.

The Church at Linda Vista
Things at Linda Vista are doing relatively well. We are glad to report that there have been four people who have decided to become Christians this year. We will send out a separate report to give more details about each of them.

On this occasion, we would like to dedicate this space to thank the youth group at the Nichols St. Church of Christ in Bay City, Texas, for their contribution of school supplies for our children at Linda Vista.

In Guatemala, school begins in January and ends in October. This creates quite a burden in January and February for the families, as they usually have to come up with funds to register their children in school, to buy uniforms and to purchase school supplies. Therefore, the youth group’s contribution was distributed to many of the children at Linda Vista during the middle of January; it was just a few days after classes began, to help alleviate some of the burden the parents faced.

Prayer Requests
As we close, we would like to offer this list of prayer requests. Please lift up these requests often before the Father of mercies and all grace.

For Snezana’s health. She has had a few health issues recently

For the churches in San Cristobal, Coban, Las Pacayas, and for the new church plant in Santa Cruz—all in the department of Alta Verapaz

For the spiritual and numerical growth of the Linda Vista church

For God to continue to use us in this part of the world

For ITL students and their families as we have just begun another school year at ITL

And for all those previously mentioned: Anibal, Darwin, new Christians, for Milan, the Ivic family, Snezana’s family, our families, and all those we are seeking to reach with the Gospel
May God grant you the peace that passes all understanding!

Serving Jesus,
Hi Jones, Byron Benitez, Snežana Benitez
